Gerard Hutch, known as the head of a notorious crime family in Ireland, narrowly missed out on winning a seat in parliament in the country’s recent elections. Despite strong support from economically deprived areas within the Dublin Central constituency, Hutch ultimately finished fifth, falling short of the four available seats.
Hutch, known as ‘The Monk’, was initially seen as the favorite for the final seat until Labour’s Marie Sherlock received a late boost. Hutch, who has been the subject of international money laundering investigations, emphasized that his candidacy was motivated by a desire to better represent the neglected inner-city community where he grew up.
The campaign, which candidate-elect Gary Gannon deemed a “protest vote,” reflected community frustrations over inadequate housing and health care. While film director Jim Sheridan highlighted anger over ongoing drug-related problems, US authorities have linked Hutch and his family to a violent gang rivalry in Dublin.
